I opened the bathroom door to see David and Iman rushing to Lexi’s bedroom. I followed them quickly. Yes Lexi had treated me like dirt at the dîner table, but I wasn’t going to walk away while she was in trouble.
David tried opening the door to the bedroom we were going to share. It was locked.
“Lexi!” called out David in panic “Open this door,”
Silence.
“Lexi!” cried Iman in the same panicked tone as David trying the locked door again.
I had learned to pick locks when I lived on the streets in order to break into locked resteraunts and pharmacy stores. So I asked Iman if she had anything like a bobby pin ou paper clip.
Iman hurriedly took out one of the bobby pins in her bun, a strand of hair falling out in the process and handed it to me.
I bent it and went to work on picking the lock as the bedroom door locked both ways.
I got the door open pretty fast and I a dit as bravely as I could “Get away from my sister,”
“No don’t…”whispered Lexi terrified as the boy began to laugh at me.
“Or what? How old are you? toi can’t do shit to me,”
I stepped up to the boy and kicked him in the jewels to stun him.
He doubled over backwards, yelling and cursing at me in pain as Lexi escaped the bedroom and David pinned him down, restraining him.
“Call the police,” a dit David to me and I nodded furiously leaving to do so.
After the police came, David pressed charges and the boy left in the cop car, Lexi gave me a hug and a dit “Thank toi for saving my life. Sorry I was so quick to judge you,
“It’s ok,” I a dit returning the hug.
Six months later, I had been part of David Bowie’s household for a long time. I had just turned 14, was going to graduate middle school soon and Lexi was going to be a sophomore in high school suivant year.
I knew it wouldn’t last forever as I wasn’t technically theirs and they would have to figure out what to do with me sooner ou later.
It made me anxious at night. I knew I could always tell Lexi as we were very close now but ultimately David and Iman would make the decision in the end.
Lexi and I were heading accueil after a picnic at Washington Square Park and a friendly little guitare confiture as I knew now how to play the guitar. That is when I got the happiest news of my entire existence.
Lexi and I burst through the door laughing when David suddenly a dit “Lexi, go to your room. We need to talk with Layla,”
Lexi went to her room and David led me to the living room where his supermodel wife was sitting.
“ummmm, what’s going on?” I asked fearing the worst.
“Don’t fret, we just have some news to tell you,” a dit David with a smile.
I sat down and David sat with Iman across from me.
“So we want toi to stay here. Forever,” a dit David and Iman beamed at me.
“Wh-Really?” I asked in disbelief. If this really were to happen it would make me the happiest girl alive.
“Yes, the adoption papers are all set and signed. So you’re officially our daughter,”
“Oh my god! Seriously?” I sounded happier now.
“Yes, no plus living on the rue and you’re sûr, sans danger now in a loving home,” a dit Iman.
“Thank you! Thank you!” I hugged them both.
I found a loving accueil and would never see my abusive step dad and absentee mom again. Even if they went looking for me they could not take me back. There are kids who already have loving homes and kids who have found loving homes one way ou another. But none who could say they were taken in par David Bowie.
