2016 has been a relatively calm year for bubble shows. For the first time in a while, all five broadcast networks gave early renewals to the bulk of their lineups, leaving a handful of shows — mostly freshmen — on the fence. Leading the charge was the CW, which went for a rather unprecedented pickup of all of its shows on the air at the time of the renewal — 11 total. ABC has renewed 15 series, CBS, Fox and NBC – 11 each. Here are how things are shaking out for the shows that are still on the bubble at ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.
ajor two omissions in ABC’s renewal announcement were veteran procedural
. Their future is still in limbo but the feeling is that both will
be brought back for one — possibly last and possibly shorter-run seasons. I hear talks are still underway with
star Nathan Fillion who needs to sign a new deal but there are hopeful signs that thevenerable series, now in Season 8, will get a final chapter. What’s more,
is a rare procedural on the current ABC schedule, a genre the network is said to be making a push in, so bringing the long-running show back would provide continuity.
, now in its fourth season, ABC and leading studio Lionsgate TV have gone down to the wire o
n renewal a couple of times after haggling over financial terms. While not a strong ratings performer, the music drama has seen its Live+same day numbers perk up recently, and it has solid DVR bumps.
-themed TV music specials, soundtracks, tours etc. Additionally, Lionsgate TV recently lined up big names as showrunners for the potential fifth season, Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick.
has been garnering critical praise and awards attention and has enjoyed strong support at the network, so a third installment is considered likely.
, whose star Hayley Atwell already was recruited for an ABC pilot,
, which has seen a small ratings uptick and an OK DVR lift, is said to have a heartbeat, while new TGIF entry
Also not picked up yet are ABC’s multi-camera Friday multi-camera comedies
, both of which have performed reasonably well on the night. Like
, which comes from an outside studio, 20th TV, had been getting last-minute renewals after lengthy negotiations between the two companies over finances. Both 20th TV and Sony TV, the leading studio behind
, have pilots in contention at ABC this season (Sony TV has 4). Renewals of bubble shows are often delayed by the networks so they are used as leverage in multi-project negotiations when the time comes for new series pickups. The decision whether to renew one or both of the Friday comedies will probably come down to whether ABC has a strong multi-camera pilot to send there.
has showed some promise, it is owned by the network, so, unless it collapses in the ratings over the next few weeks, the family comedy, which is very much in the ABC wheelhouse, looks good to come back. However, fellow freshman comedy
now in its 11th season. It is an expensive show, with the network covering the costs full freight, while the leading studio, ABC Studios, which co-produces with CBS TV Studios, reaping
most of the benefits, including sales internationally and on-demand where
is a solid enough performer, even at this stage, and I hear CBS and ABC Studios are hammering out a new license deal for next season. It was conceivable that CBS wanted to wait to see how spinoff
did before making renewal decisions on either.
As recently as the beginning of this week, I had heard ramblings that CBS may only bring back the mothership series, and not the offshoot. But
urprised many with its sizable ratings gains this Wednesday, so it may very well be in the picture for renewal.
‘s hold this week? The sitcom had not been on the air for almost a year, it hardly was on anyone’s rad
ar with its April return but, after a so-so Season 2 premiere behind a new
held 100% of its premiere demo rating (1.5) in Week 2, even as its lead-in was cut in half when
switched to a repeat. This still is not a stellar number, and the reboot of the Neil Simon classic has been largely panned by critics, but
last night did as well as the two Thursday comedy series that have been renewed,
, it is owned by CBS and it stars Matthew Perry. With Matt LeBlanc’s CBS pilot looking likely for a pickup, it won’t be a bad idea from a marketing stand point to have two Friends on the air.
has not done particularly well in the ratings but it is making a lot of money for CBS TV Studios internationally being part of the CSI franchise, so I hear a limited third season is quite possible.
The biggest renewal question at CBS remains the freshman series. The network has not renewed a single one as none of them has been a standout and, besides swiftly cancelled
none has been a total failure. Of the batch, comedy
has been pretty underwhelming, the other three are considered to have a shot, depending on the strength of CBS’ drama pilots. (I have heard a possibility for CBS to chose between
, also a co-production with an outside studio). In unscripted remarks last month, CBS Corp. chairman Leslie Moonves indicated that the network may renew as many as five first-year series.
, which recently ended its third season with a shocking finale that saw one of its leads die. While nowhere near the ratings highs of the first season,
logs solid DVR gains, and, because of the famous underlying property, the series makes money for Fox internationally, so getting to four seasons would be financially beneficial for the company. While
is on the bubble, there had been positive signs, and I hear the studio has been doing contingent staffing moves to be prepared in case the series is renewed.
ng Rob Lowe (fully owned by Fox) remain on the bubble. The dynamic between them has been changing, with the edge constantly shifting between the two. Whichever series gets renewed, it may be held as a midseason replacement. Freshmen
The Minority Report, Second Chance, Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life
is looking better by the day. Originally only given a partial Season 2 renewal, the series starring Debra Messing has been unspectacular but reliable ratings performer in the Wednesday 8 PM time slot, drawing a solid viewership. When
d is not expected to come back. NBC also this week tried
in the hour, which didn’t go very well, with the reality flagship series hitting a low. So while it is still very much on the bubble and is not owned by NBC,
still is considered a good utility player option for the network, whose current lineup features a large number of procedurals.
is a rare prestige multi-camera comedy that is getting buzz and critical praise, so it looks good to come back for a third season. Its companion, new comedy
, which switched to a live format this season, has internal support and is a possibility but is considered a long shot.

Can’t believe The Odd Couple might actually be renewed.
I know. The storyline of this season’s first episode was the same exact story a Will & Grace episode, complete with an unexpected meeting in the laundry room, and this week’s episode was weirdly pointless. It they’re buying the scripts to old TV series this early in their run (as Living Single did with Golden Girls scripts), I don’t hold out much for this show creatively.
CSI original, Criminal Minds original and Telenovela are all I like from that batch.
Interesting that grandfathered and the grinder are going head to head for renewal. Hopefully Odd Couple and Crowded are renewed. I love that these Spring show are showing some life like Odd Couple and Beyond Borders. Hopefully it will lead execs to schedule them better and future spring shows. The voice was a spring show so Spring shows do have life as beyond borders, and odd couple have shown as well. always interesting to see how they do.
Thanks for these articles. Always look forward to the scoop on these shows.
GA LA VANT!! The best show on tv that nobody watched!
About Castle, what about talks with Stana Katic?
Why would they have talks with someone that’s probably already signed on.
I highly doubt Stana has signed. Actually i highly doubt she will be back
The press always mentions Nathan Fillion renewing his contract, but the second year in a row, they forget “Castle” is heavily based on the main couple, so Stana Katic renewing hers is as important as Fillion. If they secure him but not her, ABC can say goodbye to another huge chunk of the show’s audience.
The show works because of the amazing chemistry between Stana and Nathan
We watch the show to see Castle and Beckett together fully at work and in life , love
This season showed that them apart does not work .
Bring back the Castle we love that means The character of Rick and Kate together
you have it exactly – this season was so disappointing with them apart. made me only watch for the hope that they might be together, and the great episodes were ones like ‘death wish’, which were a return to what makes the show great.
They always approach Nathan Fillion first as he is considered the shows lead and Stana Katic is a co-lead. Once they sign him the move to her and then continue on.
They killed the love I had for Sleepy Hollow when they killed off Abby. Even if they do bring it back, I’m never watching it again. Already removed it from my DVR list.
^This^. I did the exact same thing and removed Sleepy Hollow from my DVR.
I agree! Abby and Crane were magic together. No Abby…. no magic!
I am hoping Castle is back for a 9th season but only if Stana and Nathan are back
The show will not work without both leads back
The recent ratings and reviews bare this out . With the characters of Kate and Rick back together more viewers are back and the episodes are once again getting good reviews
So bring back Castle but only with both Stana and Nathan back
I really hope that Undateable manages to get the season 4 renewal – it is a very fun and entertaining show. The live format works for it.
I’m ok if everything on this page disappears, except Limitless.
“…new TGIF entry The Catch appears unlikely to come back.”
I think you mean, “…new TGIT entry The Catch appears unlikely to come back.”, because “The Catch” airs on Thursday, not Friday.
So long, Muppets! ABC blew it big time by making it a copy of The Office…and NO MUSICAL NUMBERS?? What’s the Muppets without music? Cancelled.
The total failure of the Muppets is the reason ABC is going to clean house in their comedy department. Also they couldn’t figure out how to launch a Marvel comedy this season even though the DC comics comedy at NBC is looking like it will get a series order.
I tried to watch it. I figured it would be a throwback to my childhood… Hugely disappointed!
And what about Stana Katic? Is she in talks with ABC?
Shame Cold Justice and Cold Justice: Sex Crimes were cancelled by TNT. This two shows beat every show listed above and actually did some good in the world. #NoJustice
How can The Real O’Neals be considered coming back? That would mean ABC has no room for new comedies next season which will not happen.
THE CATCH is worth keeping on the air–that show can evolve into something.
I hope Castle gets renewed with both main stars, it deserves a decent planned out series finale. Not something slapped together at the last minute.
CBS please renew Supergirl it has done well in very strong competition and its still CBS best rated new drama as well.
Thank you for Sleepy Hollow and Criminal Minds staying.
Glad to hear Nashville is Likley coming back
Les bragged about bringing back all of CBS’ freshman shows and now he’s hedging?
If they cancel Castle, could there be another Firefly???
