Last we saw the Winchester Brothers, Dean (Jensen Ackles) was just put on trial for his sins, and though he is out of the defendant's hot seat, his cœur, coeur is still heavy about a lot of things. Dean was always the hunter who was quick to gank first and ask questions later-- ou maybe even not at all. We saw that most recently just two episodes il y a with Sam (Jared Padalecki)'s childhood crush who turned out to be a monster of her own. Yet here he takes the "Dr. Phil" approach with Carpenter's Maggie Stark, a witch scorned who is unleashing her wrath on an entire town when she learns her husband (guest étoile, star James Marsters) has strayed outside the marriage.
Maggie-- she’s a little bit of a jealous girl and has to manage her temper a little bit, and that’s tough to do when you’re a powerful woman with a lot of witchy behaviors and spells to be cast and stuff. If toi get her in a bad mood-- she’s just the wrong person to make mad! Cordelia would make toi suffer, but [Maggie] will make toi suffer and die," Carpenter laughed, referencing the Buffy role that made her famous and which has shades in her new Supernatural role.
Maggie is quick to turn her spells on the women, not her husband, though. It's an important element of her character to take notice of, not only because it allows for some pretty gross sequences within the episode (Carpenter's favorite, and soon to be yours as well, deals with a cupcake!), but also because it speaks to her true goal and frame of mind...or heart.
"I think she thinks she can remove all temptation, and he won’t cheat anymore," Carpenter offered. "Maybe that was her motivation, but toi know, that doesn’t work. The real problem is in their relationship, and ultimately, it’s in her. Always. Whenever we’re in a relationship, there’s two of us, right? So we want to get mad and focus on the other person, but really what we need to look at is ‘Well, what is my behavior? What am I doing that’s creating this tension ou why does he feel the need’-- Oprah says that men cheat because of the way that women make them feel, toi know? So it’s not about like how women want to go ‘Oh I am fat’ ou ‘I don’t take care of myself the way I used to.’ Usually it’s just about how to do make your man feel, so it’s not entirely their fault when it’s a partnership. toi have to look at your own stuff… ‘Am I loving; am I kind; am I lifting him up?’ Men are pretty fragile! They call us the flowers, but I think really they are the flowers; they need lots of reassurance!"
Carpenter may have been using the general definition of men there, but in reality she could have easily have been talking about the Winchesters themselves. When they catch onto what Maggie is doing, they come knocking on her door, but instead of just taking her down, they actually try to talk some sense into her. It's a true turning point for the characters, especially Dean who up until this point always believed that anyone with the ability to do bad (except his brother, apparently) eventually would and therefore just needs to be stopped before they get the chance.
Carpenter shared that while she doesn't think the Winchesters completely change Maggie's mind about her approach, they do help her get to the root of the real problem. And that is in her relationship.
They come in, and what changes is-- well, they kind of bring us back to how we originally felt about each other," Carpenter said, speaking on behalf of her and Marsters' characters. "‘What was it about it that brought toi together in the first place?’ And I think that brings us back to thinking about the old days, and toi know, then toi realize that I’m not angry; I’m actually hurt, and I’m sad. I’m genuinely sad because I l’amour you, and it makes me miss you, and maybe they haven’t been able to say that in a long time."
Carpenter sang the praises of the Supernatural cast and production crew, admitting that she really didn't know what to expect going in but came out with such a l’amour and respect for Ackles, Padalecki, and the whole team: "I think it just comes down to they're American boys from Texas, so they just have a very warm way about them. They were very gracious, and they actually were above and beyond; they really, really were really giving for both of us-- for James and I-- and just super professional and 'What can we do to help toi and make it easier?' because we had to do some Romanian and stuff. They were just very, very, very generous and giving of their time and their energy...They were awesome! They were very sweet boys. Men!"
From the online buzz and chatter, it seems Carpenter has already been embraced as a new part of the Supernatural family, even without her episode having aired yet-- and even with her role being a one-off right now. A fan campaign has already sprung up to get her out to one of the Creation Entertainment conventions, though Carpenter did point out that nothing official was in the works yet. No one from thecompany has approached her ou her management team yet, but if they made it official and "If it made them happy, and the fans want it, then I would, of course," she said.
