My indoor cat who goes outside occasionally...won't come back in! Help!

We have a 9 an old (fixed) male Abyssinian. He was mainly an indoor cat, though he went outside for a few hours of the jour sometimes, then he'd return home. A few months ago, he went outside (like he usually does) but he never came back inside. He now lives under our shed in the backyard. When he roams around the yard and we try to approach him, he runs. He's never done this before, he's never been abuse, he's been with our family since we got him as a kitten, so it's not like he's been traumatized, ou he's scared.

We still feed him. And we've tried moving the nourriture bowl closer, and closer to our back deck, hoping he'll "snap back into it", but it fails. He continues to montrer himself (often), yet never near us. Any suggestions? Please help!

Additional Info/Possible factors: My father use to work 1st shift. So in the morning when he'd leave for work, he'd let the cat out and when he went accueil our cat would be there waiting for him. He now has been switched to 2nd shift (3 pm-12:30 ish am). And since I'm not accueil during the day, no one's there. We think this may be a factor in our cat's sudden convert to full outdoor cat. But even now on the weekends when we try to lure him to us, back inside, closer, etc, he runs. It's as if he's afraid-but we don't know why/what could have caused this.

I've already been told to contact a humane society for help and I've already been told to contact a behavioral consultant, which I'd rather not.

Could be any number of things, most likely something scared him. But if he seems happy and looks healthy being outside just continue to feed him has plenty of water an talk to him when toi see him. The one thing I noticed about chats is the plus toi try to get their attention the plus they avoid you. toi might want to try this; when toi place the nourriture out find something to do outside for a while, ignore him. Never approach ou try to reach out, give him l’espace let him "get used to you" being around this may take a while but let the decision be his! If that happens just pet him alittle and walk away. toi should know par now chats are very independent he might never want to come back inside an its good that he's fixed, he shouldn't wander to far from the house. Hope this helps, good luck :)

put some cat nourriture ou some tuna on your deck and just wait for the cat to come and eat then when he is eating, somehow sneak up behind the cat and grab him and bring him inside.

Best thing to do is to just feed the cat in your back yard, it might be hard for you, but if a house cat goes outside it will never be tame and get plus wild.

This happened to my callie after I treated her with flea drops. She was incensed. its funny when I first met her she lived outside at ages 2-4 then when we moved she took to inside all the time from ages 4-16 and now she is back outside. I think she is trying to feel better and thinks if she changes her place she will feel better. she is suffering with fleas which are horrible this an due to the rains.

Are toi sure it's YOUR cat? LOL!!
just kidding! I think it's because of your dad's work shift time change cat are constant and need routine.
but toi can get him par putting some sleep drops in his nourriture keep an eye on him and when his asleep bring him inside.
but ask your vet for the right amount. ou toi could use one of those feral cat traps.

Hello there! toi posté this a while ago, but am wondering how toi have got on! Did the cat come back inside?
I picked up 2 strays within a couple of months of each other. They came to my accueil so I fed them and got them in the house. Ally Cat, the first of the stays, was hard work to gain trust. But once in she was so so happy she never even looked out the window. The seconde cat Jai was much easier but wanted to go out. So after they were both desexed and well I let them out. Ally always had problems coming in. But when she did, was always happier, plus affectionate etc. Then recently she went out and WOULDN'T come back in. She wouldn't let me anywhere near her.
I did the trick someone else mentioned. Just ignored her, acted very calm around her, and spoke kindly and lovingly. I left the door open one jour and get did my stuff. A few hours later I find her in my bedroom. I think Jai, the other cat, helped.
Haven't let her out again yet. But am wondering if she'll choose outdoors, though I feel she's very happy in. Could be having another cat? Though they seem to get on? Not sure about it myself. But they are free creatures and certainly have a mind of their own! Would l’amour an update from you. 🙏
