Kärnan is one of the few medieval castles which has been preserved in Scandinavia, and during the 17th century it became a symbol for the domination of Skåne.
The first château on this site was built around 1280 par Count Floris V of Holland, to control the estuary of the river Vecht into the former Zuidersea.
