I know not everyone celebrates Christmas, but in many countries, there is a big break coming up, and I thought I would share some good vacation-type reads. So put these on hold at the bibliothèque now to prepare for a long period of time for relaxation and good reading.

1. His Dark Materials par Philip Pullman
(The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass)-I read this series once over a break and it is fantastic. Deep and meaningful while still a quick read. The 2nd one is my favorite.

2. Anna Karenina par Leo Tolstoy
This is probably a challenge for a lot of people, but it's one of the most amazing livres I have ever read. I tackled this one over a Christmas break and finished in a little over a week. It's a good book to go for when toi have a long stretch of time to devote to it.

3. Inheritance series par Christopher Paolini
(Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr) This is a good chance to catch up before the 4th book comes out. (Anyone know when that is, btw?) People may laugh at this pick, but the livres are very easy reads and pretty addicting. You'll get into them quickly which is perfect for the holidays. toi want to relax after all!

4. 1984 par George Orwell
If you've been putting it off, now's your chance to read this timeless classic!

5. Watership Down par Richard Adams
I know a book about rabbits on a quest sounds ridiculous but this book is completely wonderful. You'll get through it in no time.

6. Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales
This book looks intimidating, but each of the stories are very short and they are magical. toi will l’amour this. Plus, you've got time to kill ;)

7. Lord of the Rings par J.R.R. Tolkien
Now, I understand that this task is a little overwhelming, but at least try to finish one of these 3 livres over break. I promise it's still good even if toi spread it out. Tackle one this break, another in the spring and the last one over the summer.

8. The Girl of the Limberlost par Gene Stratton Porter
I completely loved this book when I was 15. It's a beautiful story. It has little to do with vacation, but it's a thick book, though a quick read once toi get into it.

9. Birth of Venus par Sarah Dunant
If toi like historical fiction, this one was very surprising to me in a good way. I usually don't go straight for the bestsellers, I'm plus of a classics girl, but I'd say this is a good vacation book.

10. The Last Wife of Henry VIII par Carolly Erickson
Another historical fiction. I learned a lot about English history and about Henry VIII and his many wives. The livres starts when he's still married to his first wife. I read this book literally from cover to cover without setting it down. A great fast read.

So there toi have it. This is not a liste of my favori livres (though many do fit into that category) but instead a true liste of livres I think toi will find very enjoyable over vacation. So challenge yourself and read as many as possible ou even just one! Let me know what toi think, I'd l’amour to hear comments.

Hi everyone!

I just want to say enough already. We have determined again and again that Vampire and Twilight amoureux comprise maybe a little less than half of the members who are answering these questions. I say we just give it a rest now. We don't need any plus picks about whether toi l’amour ou hate vampires, which is the best vampire series, ou any other opportunities for fighting over an issue that's at a standstill.
Now I have read Twilight and am not a fan, though I will admit they are addicting while toi read them. I have a dit how I feel about the books, the writing, the characters and all...

Sometimes it's great to be a bookseller.

B.E.A. (which I didn't go to, alas) has passed and our book buyers have come back with some great ARCs in their suitcases and begun to share the book love. The eagerly-awaited seconde book to The Hunger Games is in my hands, as well as Jeannette Wall's new "true-life novel". I was also happily surprised par a new book in a new series par Cinda Williams Chima, auteur of the Heir trilogy (The Warrior Heir; The Wizard Heir; The Dragon Heir). All three are fantastic -- y'all should pick them up come Autumn 2009!

Catching Fire par Suzanne Collins

BJ Gallagher Hateley and Warren H. Schmidt
2006, 172 pages

I know the titre may make toi smile and giggle. I did too when it was introduced to me as a gift when I was studying for my master’s degree in psychology in 2001. And what a gift! I am since happily involved in human resources for a law firm employing over 600 people, including 250 lawyers. Over 600 very different human beings with very different ways of thinking, but 600 very different human beings all living for the same purpose: make the best out of everything life gave to each and everyone of them – creativity and courage –...

Daniel Goleman, 1996, 288 pages

A penetrating analysis of the dark corners of human deception, enlivened par intriguing case histories and experiments – It was written for the professional, yet is understandable par the layman as well because it is so well and clearly written. This is a great book for coaches, counsellors, and therapists working with individuals that are grieving ou dealing with past issues. I found the book to be helpful in explaining why so many of the people I coach seem to have denied ou repressed very emotionally traumatic incidents. The human mind is amazing and complex....
