Ma Sorcière Bien Aimée Réponses

Dick York's back injury happened in 1959 when he was filming the film "They Came To Cordura" with Gary Cooper. It was the seconde last jour of shooting and Dick and Gary were doing a scene pulling a trolley car carrying several men. Something went wrong and when one of the other cast members suddenly let go of the handle, Dick was left holding the weight of about 180 pounds. This caused all the muscles on the right side of his back to rip. Although he was in severe pain for days, apart from taking a few painkillers, Dick did not really worry too much about it at the time. His spine healed but incorrectly. Over the years the pain became worse and Dick literally depended on numerous painkillers everyday. It's believed that a combination of both is what caused his seizure on the set of Ma Sorcière Bien Aimée in 1969 which forced him to leave the series.
Over the years, the discs in Dick's spine slowly crumbled. It is a dit that he also shrank from his 6'1" frame to 5'10" and was almost totally hunched before becoming bed-ridden in later years.

It was on the set of 'They Came to Condura' where he was using a scaffold of some type and the director yelled 'cut' so another cast member had used the lever for it (maybe to lower it?), which caused York to fall and tear his back muscles. He sustained a permanent back injury. His career was cut short par this injury, due to him quitting Ma Sorcière Bien Aimée and being confined to his bed. He also had an addiction to prescription pain medication, which he later beat.

toi are all describing the injury slightly wrong. He didn't fall. And another actor didn't let go of anything...he grabbed it. The scene had York and Gary Cooper on a rail car. Those things that go on railroad tracks where toi push up and down like an old well pump. He was on the downstroke of the pompe and just starting to pull back up when the director yelled Cut. One of the extras on the plat, à plat of the car grabbed a hold of the lever just as York was trying to pull back up. So, instead of the 10-20 pounds of force he was expecting to pull up, he was pulling up almost 200 with the weight of the extra as well. It tore the muscles on the right side of his back clear off the bone. He also didn't treat it properly until years later, and it healed incorrectly, basically twisting his spine in the process.

The scaffolding injury came from the set of Ma Sorcière Bien Aimée in Jan.1969. He re-injured his back, was hospitalized and ended up leaving the series. They had other shows he had already taped and they finished out the season with those shows sprinkled in with shows without York.
