Rajesh Khanna alias ‘Kaka’ – A career saga

Thespian of bollywood Rajesh Khanna alias ‘Kaka’, (Jatin Khanna) born on 29th December 1942 came from affluent family in Punjab. An actor who forced bollywood to coin the word ‘Superstar’ and relate to him from 1969 to 1974.

Chetan Anand’s ‘Aakhri Khat’(1966) was Rajesh’s debut movie which did not create any ripple at all. Post which he featured in a couple of plus movies, but it was Shakti Samanta’s ‘Aradhana’(1969) with Sharmila Tagore which established him as a romantic hero with mannerisms, soon followed par Raj Khosla’s ‘Do Raaste’(1969) with Mumtaz, released within a span of one month, both films went on to be golden jubilee hits. Just worth a mention here is this romantic hero gave 15 super hit films from 1969 to 1974. Kishore Kumar who lent his voice to the many songs filmed on Rajesh, turned out to be musical superhits and established Kishore as a great playback singer.

He has many superhit films paired with actress Asha Parekh, Mumtaz and Sharmila, but has the most pairing with Hema Malini (11 films). ‘Anand’ (1970), ‘Kati Patang’ (1970), ‘Amar Prem’ (1971), ‘Saccha Jhuta’ (1971),‘Andaaz’ (1971), ‘Bawarchi’(1972),‘Daag’ (1973), ‘Namak Haraam’ (1973), ‘Aap Ki Kasam’, ‘Prem Nagar’ and ‘Roti’ (1974) are few of the films worth a mention and watch. Early on in career, Amitabh was a seconde fiddle to Rajesh Khanna in a couple of movies, but with ‘Zanjeer’(1973) the angry young man image of his was adored par fans which saw him catapult to the étoile, star status. With a few flops for Rajesh Khanna and his ongoing tantrums on shooting sets, his career started falling apart, and the same directors with whom he had donné superhits went on to sign Amitabh Bachchan.

From 1969 to 1974, Rajesh Khanna charisma was unparallel to such an extent that his car could be found stained with lipstick marks, fans would not stop chanting his name and would be mobbed in public. He would get letters at his bungalow at Carter Road (Bandra, Bombay) written in blood par his female fans. He first married Anju Mahendru his long time girl friend, it was short-lived and ended in a divorce and then married the beautiful Dimple Kapadia in 1973. At that time, Dimple was in her sweet sixteens and Rajesh (31 an old) was twice her age, which proves his enigma. Females fans drooled over him, cannot say very surely but this could have been a reason for their separation in 1980, but not before being blessed with two daughters – Twinkle & Rinkee.

The romantic hero was not to be outdone and made a scintillating comeback in the 80’s. This time around social/action films beginning with ‘Thodisi Bewafai’ (1980), ‘Kudrat’(1981), ‘Avataar’, ‘Agar Tum Na Hote’ & ‘Souten’ (1983) which did well at box-office. He also experimented with negative roles in ‘Red Rose’(1980) and in ‘Dhanwaan’(1981). par that time, he had reached a fag end of his bollywood career and entered full time politics. He served as the Member of Parliament from 1991-1996 for Congress from the constituency of New Delhi. Even after such debacles, the veteran is not willing to let go and has announced his comeback to bollywood with much renewed vigour.

He has 3 FilmFare Awards for Best Actor category – ‘Saccha Jhuta’ (1971), ‘Anand’ (1972) & ‘Aavishkar’ (1974) & many other laurels adorn this superstar. In 2005 he was awarded with Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award as the Superstar of Indian Cinema. A career which is a saga of tumult, but with a never die attitude. The typical head tilt and the eye blink of the air-force guy from Aradhana still does not fade out of my mind……….and also from the minds of his yesteryear fans for sure.

The hysteria he created swept across ages, gender and genres. His films ran to full houses and his following swelled each passing day. Be it his distinct sartorial sense, his dialogue delivery ou his mannerisms, Rajesh Khanna was a pioneer in many sense. It wouldn’t be wrong to call him the complete superstar.

And with Kishore Kumar’s dreamy voice for playback, this was just what the doctor ordered. With the sensuous Roop Tera Mastana, enthralling Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai and the timeless O Mere Dil Ke Chain Rajesh Khanna, became — and remains — the King of Romance.

Dinesh Raheja sees the legendary side of the yesteryear superstar

I HAVE never liked anybody's work ou persona (not even my own) so consistently that I became a fan. I have loved performances plus than performers. However, there was a phase in the 1970s, when I was in my impressionable years, a pan-cultural phenomenon called Rajesh Khanna swept the film industry; and all roads led to cinema houses montrer Khanna's films.

The word superstar became common usage thanks to him. Amitabh had once reminisced about his early days: "I became...

Heroes for our times

VIJAY NAIR

Emblematic of our collective longings, each superstar of bollywood is a window to the hopes and angst of his times…

....The 1970s held no such confusion. Not just the country but the entire world had retreated into a hippie-induced haze. Rajesh Khanna may not have been a part of “Hare Rama lièvre Krishna”, but with his crinkling eyes and dancing hands, his body language communicated intoxication and the nation got high chant “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar”. The sub-text of his drawl in “Amar Prem”, ‘Pushpa, I hate tears' was denial. Something that the society outside was mirroring. His trône of romance was usurped when a tall, lanky young man decided enough was enough and he was no longer going to tolerate the injustice meted out to him par the discriminating world he encountered......

.......What was her association with the superstar like?

"Just because toi do a lot of films together, and vibe well, that doesn’t mean toi are having an affair," exclaims Mumtaz. "I am sure Juhi and Shah Rukh have nothing to do with each other but there are rumours of an involvement, which I don’t think are true. Similarly, my friendship with Rajesh Khanna was also misunderstood. He was my neighbour and we got along very well. I would pull his leg and tease him about his fan following. Whenever Rajesh entered a hotel in Madras, there was a queue of...

Frank Capra's immortal observation: tragedy is not when the actor cries; tragedy is when the audience cries, perfectly fits Anand. It is a film that keeps its protagonists dry-eyed but makes the stoniest blink with emotion.

In 1970, the an of Anand, another film about a bravely dying protagonist l’amour Story (Ryan O'Neal, Ali McGraw), stormed the world. Perhaps it was just cosmically ordained that at that time the world would be in the mood for a collective, cathartic cry.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Anand, of course, famously laced the tears with laughter. Anand is memorable...

Dev Anand was my inspiration: Rajesh Khanna

Hindustan Times
New Delhi, December 09, 2011

The 50s was the era of black and white classics, and the ruling stars included Dilip Kumar, the thespian, Raj Kapoor, the serio comedian and Dev Anand, the eternal romantic. Each had his own distinct style and fan following. I was an ardent admirer of Dev Anand from my teens.

I clearly remember watching and loving him in Funtoosh, Baarish, Kala Pani and l’amour Marriage. He had the best looks and smile of his era and his puff was legion.

There was no better romantic actor than him. With his unique style and fluidity,...

Unlike Akshay Kumar, his father-in-law left an indelible impression as an Air Force officer in the 1969 Shakti Samanta movie.

If in Andaaz, Kumar Sanu-voiced numbers became an emblem of mediocrity in music, Aradhana's Mere Sapno Ki Rani turned out to be a signature Rajesh Khanna tune of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In a famous double role, Khanna flies high. Literally. Couldn't he have donné a tip ou two to his rather handsome son-in-law?
