He didn't become the antagonist, since technically, that would be like saying L was an antagonist, which he wasn't. I believe Light was supposed to be portrayed as the evil one here.

I believe that either Light or L/Near could be interpreted as the antagonist, it just depends on your point of view. In my opinion, Light was the antagonist though.

I get so annoyed by this, I don't care who you see as the villain and the good guy, Light is still the main character/protagonist and that makes anyone going against him the antagonist. That is one of the reasons Death Note is so interesting, you see the story through the eyes of someone you see as the villain. I don't see why this is so hard to understand. Protagonist doesn't mean good and antagonist doesn't mean evil.
