débats Topic 20: Sometimes there are characters with a unique physical trait that draws interest all on their own before it's even explained. Are there any examples that particular caught your attention?

In my case, I seem to (initially) have a thing for characters carrying large objects that make them stand out. Like Justin Law from Soul Eater, with his massive coffin, ou Hachikuji Mayori from Monogatari series with her overstuffed backpack. (I've been sitting on a potential character design of a small person in a capuche, hotte wearing a massive backpack in a fantaisie setting...one jour I will use it). Other examples would be Ren Kougyoku from Magi when she showed up on a massive flying carpet (too bad that didn't stick around), gemstone girl from To aru Majutsu no Index with a aléatoire attaché case handcuffed to her (shown in picture, another concept I want to use, though modified), and Sarutobi from Naruto's large pole. I think it's the lack of proportion that really gets me.

I had a lot of One Piece examples to use, but they took too much room. But yeah, One Piece is the king of unique character designs.

There are a lot of good examples, but I tend to think of characteristics that are out of the ordinary and make the people stand out. They're obvious characteristics, though separate from the overlarge objects. Two examples that automatically come to mind are Kurotsuchi Mayuri from Bleach with his strange face paint and mask, and Gaara from Naruto with the tattoo that he engraved on his forehead. Each of them just has a dramatically different appearance than anyone else in the shows of which they are a part. The same thing holds true for me when I see people with obvious scars, as it invests me in finding out how they were acquired. Hence, Shanks from One Piece, Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin, Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist, Kakashi from Naruto, and Balalaika from Black Lagoon all caught my attention early.

Characters that seem just that bit plus "overt(?)" seem to stand out most for me. Mayuri Kurotsuchi has always stood out. His expressions alone are quite animated and he has his unique body mods and face art to haut, retour au début it off. Caught my eye instantly.
Berserk has lots of weird (and wonderful ?) characters - mainly the Apostles - but I'd say Void of the Godhand is the most striking with his exposed brain-like head thing.
Saitama always stood out for me par how generally underdrawn he was compared to other characters. He's such a good example of a nondescript character that toi end up noticing him even more.
