Humphrey woke up. Kate was sleeping opposite him. He put his arms around her.
Her eyes opened. "Humphrey."
"Kate." Humphrey responded, snuggling in her fur.
Their honeymoon would be over tommorow. Not that it had been much of a honeymoon. The plan had been to go up a mountain somwhere and tanière, den up for a few days, occasionaly going logboarding. But things had come up. Humphrey had been dissapointed when Kate told him they'd be spending their honeymoon at home. But she'd told him she would make it up to him. Even so, this was their last jour together before she would have to go back to work as one of the leaders of the pack. Garth and Kate usualy took hunting parties out to get food. Chris's explosive arrival had solved that problem. But Kate still had a lot of duties to be getting on with. Humphrey would be lucky to see her during the weeks. At least he got a say in how the pack was run now. The four leaders, Kate, Lilly, Garth and Humphrey formed a sort of council. Humphrey was completely in charge of all the male omegas. Lilly the females. Garth was in charge of the mail alphas. Kate the females. As their leaders were off, The male omegas and the female alphas had had a very easy week. That would change later. Lilly and Garth had become mates a while back, which was what had delayed Kate and Humphrey's wedding. At least he could howl whenever he wanted now.
She smiled at him. "Is it morning already?" she asked.
"Yep." Humphrey responded.
"We should go and get breakfast. We've got a big jour ahead of us."
"What?"
She smiled. "You'll see."
Once they'd had breakfast, Kate and Humphrey set off into the forest. Eventually, they arrived at a small pond.
"Me and Lilly were born here. In that den."
She pointed across the pond.
"I always used to come here. To gather my thoughts and things. toi know."
Humphrey looked around. "This place must be quite special to you, huh?"
"Yeah. Very." She took his paw with a surprisingly firm grip and led him into the den. "This was my old toy," she said, picking up a small bone. "I have loads of these now."
"Erm, Kate." Humphrey a dit nervously. "You're hurting my paw."
"Sorry," she a dit without loosening her grip at all.
"Humphey.. do you... do toi know what mating is?"
"Of course I do. Your dad took me aside the jour before our wedding. Told me everything."
"So toi know what a heat is, then?"
"I wasn't really listening that well. I know how to do it."
"Well basicly, i'm on a cycle. There's three months in every an where I will have pups if I mate. I try to keep away from males on those months. I got.. urges otherwise. But this year..."
Humphrey stopped her. "Wait, we're going to...?"
She just smiled. She still wouldn't let go of his paw. And now Humphrey knew why.
"Come here, humphrey." She a dit in a seducive tone.
Humphrey grinned.
"I'm bored," Saltey said, punching the oreiller on his hammock into a plus confortable shape. Chris was sitting at the computer, typing out a sophisticated code file that controled ROMbot's AI so he was afraid of the dark and could feel pain again.
"How about we play a game." he a dit at last.
"Good idea." Mooch said. "How about... pin the tail on the donkey?"
"We don't have a donkey."
"Pin the tail on the Chicken?"
"We don't have a tail."
"Pin the sausage to the chicken."
"We don't have a chicken."
"Pin the sausage to the cooler!"
"We don't have a pin."
"Selotape the sausage to the cooler!"
"Or a sausage."
"PUT A BIT OF SELOTAPE ON THE COOLER!"
"Seems like a pretty boring game to me."
"You have to do it blindfold."
"We don't have a blindfold."
"We can do it without, can't we?"
"I suppose so. I'll start."
He took a bit of selotape and put it on the cooler. Then he walked back to his "Chair" and sat down.
"Your turn."
Shakey and Mooch did the same.
"I think I prefer chess." Saltey a dit eventually.
"Me too." Chris a dit misribly. "I'd better get ROMbot Discreet Dent before he mouths off again. Garth's got it in for him, i'm telling toi now."
He left the cave.
Just then, Shakey came in.
"Oh look, it's veggie boy. Having a good time with your two girlfriends?"
"They're not my girlfriends!"
"So they got fed up of you?"
"No. I just came to say I was sorry, but judgeing par the way toi welcomed me back I might as well apologise to the wall!"
He turned to leave and walked right into chris.
"Watch it, apples!"
"You were quick."
"They sent me back down. Kate and Humphrey are busy."
Exitement spread through the den.
"What are they doing?"
"God knows. Probably just out for a walk."
"Oh no they're not." Shakey said, grinning. "Jasmine knows Kate. Apparrently she likes to go down to the pond on our boarder. Gathering her thoughts and things. But yesterday she told jasmin she was going to take Humphrey there."
"But why?"
Shakey just smiled. "None of your damn business."
"Oh come on, Shakey. We won't tell."
"We're sorry, buddy." Mooch joined in.
Shakey just shook his head.
"See you, guys."
"You jerk, Shakey." Mooch said.
"Yeah." Saltey joined in.
Shakey just walked off.
"So." Chris said. "You wanna get him back?"
"What? How?"
"It's called deduction. Look at my paw. What do toi see?"
"I see a paw."
"You're halfway there. What can toi tell about with this paw just par looking at it."
"It's yours?"
"Exactly. toi are all too dense to deduce. When toi look at somone, toi see nothing. When I look at someone, I see what they had for breakfast. I see emotions. Emotions they're trying to hide. I see where they've been. I see it all."
"That's a pretty big talent you've got there." Mooch said.
"Yes. Were my cupcakes nice, Mooch?"
Mooch froze. "Are toi accusing me of-"
"There are crumbs in your fur. There has been a certain paranoia in your face all morning. toi didn't have as much breakfast."
Mooch just stared at him.
"That," Chris said, "Is deduction."
"Well, what could toi see looking at him?" saltey asked.
"Traces of another wolf's fourrure in his manteau suggests that he's been sleeping very close to another wolf. Not my girlfriend, eh? And the fourrure is different on each side. He's been sleeping suivant to both of them. Only loups in l’amour sleep side par side. Who knows? They could be fighting over him later this week. He might even have to mate with both of them! And he thinks we're stupid." Chris shook his head. "That guy's got a lot of crap ahead of him. It should be quite funny."
There was a long silence. Then Mooch spoke up.
"You're a monster, Chris, toi know that?"
"I try. Actually, I haven't used that perticuar talent of mine for a while now." He fished some oranges out of his bag. "Let's see if we can't squeze some jus, jus de out of these."
He set them on the table, tableau and brought out a mallet.
"Wait, Chris?"
"Hmmm?"
"If toi can deduce what's going to happen to shakey in the future... Can toi do the same with kate and humphrey?"
"Sure." He thought for a moment. Then his smile froze. "You don't want to hear it."
"Oh, go on."
"No."
"Please?"
Chris told them.
